Caritas responds to Rotary Peace Initiative

The Rotary Club of Jersey has proposed that Jersey could be designated as a Rotary Peace Community. To qualify Rotary has to show that the Island community is supportive of five main principles:-  Respect for the life and dignity of every person, without discrimination or prejudice  Rejection of violence, in all forms and towards all people  Resolution of conflict among people within local and global communities  Reconciliation of differences and the pursuit of harmony  Freedom of expression and cultural diversity. Caritas is the Justice, Peace and Social Responsibility Group for the Jersey Parish and responded through Father Nicholas as follows:- “Thank you for your letter of 9th February 2015 setting out your proposal to have Jersey recognized as a Peace Community. I am pleased to confirm that the Catholic Church in Jersey is fully supportive of the five principles expressed in your letter. It may interest you to know that each parish in our diocese has a Justice Peace and Social Responsibility Group and in Jersey this work falls to Caritas Jersey. That said, the principles to which you refer permeate through all the Church’s activities and organisations. We have no problem, therefore, in agreeing to reflect these principles in all our activities and I am sure that the five principles do indeed have community wide support. I look forward to celebrating with you the recognition that Jersey is a ‘Peace Community’.”
